King Leonidas

Oil Painting 2017

Both ancient and modern writers have used the Battle of Thermopylae as an example of the power of a patriotic army defending its native soil.

I wanted to hide clues in my painting about the story of the battle of The Battle of Thermopylae as to provoke discussion and maybe  relive what happened during there last stand against the Persian's.

The hidden phrase "Molon Labe" means "come and take them" and is what King Leonida's is said to have replied to the Persian king when told to lay down their arms and surrender.
